KURU WALKING SHOE...
The Company Claims:
"World's Most Anatomical Active Footwear"
I was contacted by the Kuru Company and asked if I was interested in reviewing their women's walking shoe and they sent me the Women's Insight Walking Shoe (Not the one pictured above but very similar) which I have been wearing for the past several weeks.
This is a VERY comfortable shoe. In my opinion, this is a funky cool shoe whose comfort and style sneak up on you...
When I first saw it I was a little put off by the aesthetics as I thought it looked a bit clunky but after wearing it and experiencing their comfort - I grew more and more fond of their looks. I wore them several days with the insert that comes with the shoe and was quite taken with their excellent arch support - much better than what is in the typical walking shoe. When I added my Custom-Molded Orthotic the shoe was even more comfortable but, even without a CMO, the arch support in the shoe is very effective. It has a firm arch with cushioning in strategic areas for added comfort. The sole is rigid and has a wide base and, my favorite feature, there are two lateral panels for added support of the midfoot (not on the shoe pictured above) which is beneficial for anyone who has tendonitis issues (specifically PT and Peroneal Tendonitis) and pain with lateral motion of the midfoot or rearfoot. The toebox is exceptionally wide which is perfect for anyone with mild to moderate bunions, hammertoes or a Morton's Neuroma.
The shoe can accommodate an over-the-counter ankle brace and a lighter AFO (Ankle Foot Orthosis - custom-molded brace) although a true extra-depth shoe would work better for the heavier AFO's.
Overall, I can highly recommend this shoe!
This Shoe is Recommended For Patients with:
*Mild to Moderate (and Maybe Severe) Bunions and Hammertoes.
*Mild to Moderate (and Maybe Severe) Morton's Neuroma.
*Posterior Tibialis Tendonitis.
*Peroneal Tendonitis.
*Mild to Moderate Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain)
*Mild to Moderate (Possibly Severe) Osteoarthritis.
*Painful Toenails.
*Mild to Moderate Calluses.
*Mild to Moderate Ankle Instability.
This Shoe May Not Be Effective for Patients with:
*Achilles Tendonitis - due to the fact that the shoe is pretty flat and patients with A.T. need a shoe with a slightly elevated rearfoot and more cushioning and shock absorption.
This shoe is NOT Recommended for Patients with:
*Diabetic Foot Ulcers.
*Neuropathic Ulcers.
*Charcot Foot.
Shoe Rating: 9 on a scale of one to ten with ten being the best.
Cost: $109.97
Great Shoe!

Would this shoe work for someone with hallux limitus?
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Thanks to your blog I took your list of your top 20 shoes to my podiatrist here in New Jersey and, with his blessing, I placed an order for Wolky Tulip Sandal and the Crocs Wedge Sandal. Let's hope they work. Now I'm looking for a good shoe for walking the dog and running errands. Then I need a good hiking shoe and my shoe wardrobe will be complete! What else would you suggest for Hallux limitus?
Thanks so much for considering that we want to protect our feet, but still look good and dress for work!
Hi Wendy!
ReplyDeleteThis shoe should work really well for Hallux Limitus. Have you tried the Sketcher Shape-up? If you a walker, the Sketcher shape-up may work even better as it off-loads the forefoot area and completely protects the first toe joint. Make sure you get arch support - whether it's a custom-molded insert or an excellent over-the-counter insert like Pro-step, make sure you get arch support for the shoe!
As far as a hiking shoe - try the "Five Ten Camp Four" or the Vasque "Breeze". These two shoes are very protective of the first toe joint although, if you have a large bump associated with Hallux Limitus, you may need to take the shoe to a Cobbler to stretch the leather or you can skip the first shoe lace to decrease pressure across the forefoot area.
Good Luck!
Hi Wendy!
ReplyDeleteThe Wolky Tulip is an excellent sandal for this condition. Also, check out the Allegria (try the one with the rearfoot strap). A good rule of thumb to follow when shopping for shoes when you have Hallux Limitus is to try to bend the shoe and if it bends or is flexible - in theory, it won't be as comfortable. Any motion across the forefoot area will cause pain. Once you know these general rules - you will find lots of comfortable and cute shoes!
:)
thanks for answering my questions. I heard that the sketcher shape up would be good for my condition, and the price doesn't make me cringe. But I'm a bit worried about the side to side motion I've heard of from that shoe. I've sprained an ankle in the past and am nervous about the dog pulling me suddenly in a shoe like that. Is there something similar that's got more stability side to side but still gives the same protection to the forefoot?
ReplyDeleteMany thanks!
I'll look for the hiking shoes you mentioned too.
Hi Wendy,
ReplyDeleteIf you have balance issues - a rocker bottom shoe may not be good for you. The Kuru gives excellent stability and you will not have that problem. If you want a rocker bottom shoe with more lateral stability - you might want to try a RYKA shoe (the Ripa-Ryka). Also, if price is an issue - Payless Shoe Source and Cost-Co have very nice rocker-bottom shoes that are equivalent for around $35 -$45.
Hope all is well,
Cathy
I just ordered two shoes by Ryka and the Kuru. I'll let you know how they work. The Wolkys are indeed comfortable.
ReplyDeleteHave you seen the new line of shoes by Clark called the Wave? They have some nice summer shoes and also some shoes that might be good to slip on and wear around the house. I was wondering if these might work for me to?
Hi Wendy,
ReplyDeleteI haven't had a chance to check out Clark's Wave yet. I highly recommend the Croc Clog (with the strap worn around the back of the heel) to be worn around the house. They are approved by the American Podiatric Medical Association and are great for "puttering" around the house.
Hope the shoes work out for you!

ReplyDeleteHi, I was wondering if you've tried the Kuru chicane shoes. I have been looking at them online and am hesitant in trying a shoe that I can't try on first. I currently have dansko vedas that are super worn down that even with my custom orthotics, my feet still hurt. So I know I need new shoes. Thanks.

Hi Robin,
ReplyDeleteI haven't seen the Chicane's in person, but if the quality is the same as the one I reviewed here, they were pretty darn good. It's been a couple of years so they may have changed how they make the shoe. If you're not sure, order on Zappos because they have free shipping and free return.
Hope all is well and thank you for reading!
