Dress Shoe for Patients with Bunions - Podiatrist Recommended

Shoe Recommendation for
Patients with Bunions

Steve Madden's Betsi

Steve Madden Brynn

These are two wonderful options for anyone who needs a shoe that will accommodate a painful bunion. What makes this such a great shoe is that it has the thick, rigid sole that is protective because it does not allow any motion through the bottom of the foot, which means that there is less pain, inflammation, swelling and damage to the forefoot joints, which translates to more comfort, less chance of injury and it slows the progression of bunions and hammertoes. The topcover material is what really sets this shoe apart! The material is a soft, stretchy mesh that puts less pressure on the bunion, which significantly decreases pain. I would recommend adding a dress custom-molded orthotic, which will help slow or stop the progression of the bunions formation.

This shoe is recommended for patients with:
*Bunions
*Mild to possible Moderate Hallux Limitus (decreased motion of the 1st toe joint)
*Mild to Moderate Hammertoes
*Mild Achilles Tendonitis
*Plantar Fasciitis (Heel Pain)
*Mild Morton's Neuroma
*Mild Osteoarthritis
*Mild Plantar Plate issues
*Mild Metatarsalgia
*Mild Over-Pronation (wear a dress custom molded orthotic to control pronation)

This shoe is NOT recommended for patients with:
*Severe Hallux Limitus
*Hallux Rigidus (no range of motion of the 1st toe joint)
*Diabetes
*Peripheral Arterial Disease (Poor Circulation)
*Neuropathy (Nerve Damage)
*Charcot Foot
*Ankle Instability
*Severe Over-Pronation
*Drop Foot
*Severe Hypermobility

I hope this was helpful!

I never ever thought I would see a Steve Madden shoe on your blog! And it's cute! So pleased platforms are in style.

I'd seen podiatrists before but it was never explained that what was hurting my poor, growing bunions was the motion, not just lack of arch support. That was a huge revelation. Now I have platforms and wedges with high heels like I thought would never work again, and I can stand for hours.

Looking forward to hearing your picks for sandals this year! Any thoughts about somewhat-trendy sandals with nice rigid forefoot for lots of walking? I've been looking at the Walking Company Abeo sandals but it's hard to tell how well they would minimize motion. And did you see that Orthaheel finally make some platforms with heel straps?

Thanks again for your amazing blog!

I need to ask: when you say Crocs RX in other posts, do you have a specific model in mind? I searched and there are several models, and the Zappos videos all have the demonstrator bending the shoe in half as though that were a good thing. You are right right right about motions control: I just wore Dansko clogs while I was cooking for several hours and no pain, but I wear those to work. I'd love a pair of house-only shoes that were lighter but with the same motion control. Do you have a favorite model?

Hi Jennifer,
The best sandals that I know of for comfort and lots of walking are the Wolky Ruby, Tulip, Jewel or Cloggy.

I have not seen the Orthoheel wedges yet! I'll be sure to check them out.

Thanks for reading!

Hi Cloghopper,

I love that your name is all about the shoe!

The RX Crocs that I like the best are the RX Relief and the RX Ultimate Cloud. I always check the videos and if they aren't bending them (as a selling point), it usually means they can't bend it - and that is your good shoe!

Thank you for reading!

Hi Cathleen! I recently bought a pair of Steve Madden's Betsi and I am really very impressed. I have a bunion on my left toe and was looking for a shoe like this. Your article was like a godsend to me. Thanks a lot for making my life easier!
