Podiatry Recommended Comfortable Hiking Boot - stick with the older version of the 5-10 Camp Four.

5-10 Camp Four Hiking Boot

This is the older version of the 5-10 Camp Four hiking boot and it is excellent. The new and updated 2014 version of the same boot is significantly inferior and I cannot recommend it.

If you need a good hiking boot, I recommend finding this older version. It has a thick, rigid sole that is protective of the foot joints, a wide toebox, excellent rearfoot control and it can accommodate an custom-molded orthotic.

The 2014 version of the same boot is pitiful. The sole flexes through the midfoot area, which will be a disaster for anyone recovering from a previous Lisfranc's injury. Stick to the older and far superior version.

I'm so disappointed in the company. They had an amazing hiking shoe and they 'dumbed it down' to a hiking boot that is inferior and could potentially cause hikers problems and pain.

For a more in depth review of the original 5-10 Camp Four, pelase see my previous review:

Have a wonderful day,

Dr. Cathleen A. McCarthy

My mother has been having some serious foot problems. Normal shoes don't fit her feet right anymore. Her feet are wider than the average. Is there any way to get custom shoes that won't hurt her feet?

The health of your foot really depends on the type of shoes you use. I used to think that if you didn't wear shoes that many hours of the day, then it didn't really matter what shoes you wore. Now I really understand why you get the right shoes for your feet.

Does a podiatry shoe help a lot? I've heard that it can also help a lot with back pain. I don't know if that's true, but if it is, I need it. I have bad back pain. http://www.alliedanklefoot.com/our-physicians.html

Picking the right shoes is so important to avoid any foot problems. I had some shoes that were a little bit too tight, and they pushed my toes to one side of my shoe. I ended up getting a bunion on my foot that is super painful. http://etfaonline.com/

I never knew they made podiatry shoes! That's so cool, and I'd probably end up getting a pair for myself if I knew where to buy them. I've got the worst feet so I bet it would help so much.

One thing that's never occurred to me is the important roll our shoes play in our over all foot health. There are some crazy looking shoes with all sorts of different designs that can really mess up the way we walk and the way our foot is shaped. It's important that we pay attention to these little details so that we can always have healthy feet.

Hi Nora,
Sorry for the delayed response. You can go to a prosthetic lab, such as Hangar (in Phoenix) to get custom-molded shoes. They are expensive, but they are sometimes covered by Medicare if your mother has certain medical conditions such as diabetes. Have you tried the New Balance 928 or 1540? Also, I sometimes have patients who I place in bilateral surgical shoes with ace wraps on both feet, which is comfortable and accommodates a lot of swelling.
Good luck and let me know how it turns out!

Hi Pavlos,
The best walking shoes I know about are the New Balance 928 or 1540. RX Crocs Ultimate Cloud for around the house as a bedroom slipper. Those are the closest to what I call 'podiatry shoes'.

I had a pair of shoes that made the ball of my feet very soar. It was not a good feeling. I think it was because of the kind of shoes I had. I also have some flat soled shoes that hurt my feet. I need to get a pair of shoes like this that help your feet.

Hi Ted,
I'm sure you are exactly right! Most injuries to the foot and ankle are caused by repetitive motions in poor shoegear.

You need shoes with a thick, rigid sole that you cannot bend or flex, a wide, soft toebox, arch support and rearfoot control.

Start with RX Crocs Ultimate Cloud in the house for bedroom slippers and get the New Balance 928 - this is a good starting point. For more info, look p, look up my article "My Feet Hurt: Top ten things to do to help alleviate foot pain today."

Hi - I have been in a walking boot for about 4 weeks suffering from capulitis. My foot is much better and my family is leaving for 2 weeks in Costa Rica very soon. I need good, waterproof hiking boots - high ones (not shoes) - and cannot locate high boots of the ones you recommended. Can you recommend any others? Do you know anything about Ahnu boots? Any advice you could offer would be great!

Doctor of Podiatry Discusses and Recommends Shoes. said...

Hi Cag,
Ahnu looks like a good boot but, unfortunately, I have never seen them in person. Find the one that bends and flexes the least and that should be the most comfortable. Another option is to get a full length metal shank to put inside the shoe (under the insole) to help stop motion. We have them at our office and a pair is $199. If you want to call the office and get them they can mail them to you. Order one full size smaller than whatever your shoe size is. It is a new product that we have just started carrying and I have not officially written about them yet on the blog, but since your trip is coming up - you may want to give them a try. If they are not working for you, we will be happy to give you a refund if you need to send them back - but they are excellent and should work.
Also, get your RX Crocs for around the house as bedroom slippers and if you are going to do any water sports or beach activities, I recommend the Chaco Z1 or Z2 or the Keen's Newport HW. You can get these at REI and try to find the one that bends and flexes the least.
Hope you have a wonderful trip!
